What's new about the 2026 format?
Almost everything got bigger. The tournament expands from 32 to 48 teams, playing 104 matches (up from 64) across 39 days β the most matches and the longest World Cup ever. The 48 teams are drawn into 12 groups of four, and the knockout stage gains an entirely new round.
Who hosts it?
For the first time ever, three countries co-host: Canada, Mexico, and the United States, across 16 host cities. It's also the first World Cup for Canada as host, and Mexico becomes the first country to host (or co-host) three World Cups β 1970, 1986 and 2026 β with the Estadio Azteca becoming the first stadium to stage matches at three tournaments. All three hosts qualified automatically.
How does the group stage work?
Each team plays the other three in its group once. Win = 3 points, draw = 1, loss = 0. The top two from each group advance β plus the eight best third-placed teams, ranked across all twelve groups. That's 24 + 8 = 32 teams going through, which is why finishing third can still keep a campaign alive.
How does the knockout stage work?
The new format starts with a Round of 32 β a knockout round the World Cup has never had before β then proceeds Round of 16 β Quarter-finals β Semi-finals β the third-place match and the Final on July 19, 2026 at MetLife Stadium (East Rutherford, New Jersey). Knockout matches level after 90 minutes go to extra time, then a penalty shoot-out. In Terra Soccer's unified table, a match decided on penalties counts as a draw (one point each).
Is VAR used?
Yes β the video assistant referee system continues, reviewing goals, penalty decisions, straight red cards, and mistaken identity, alongside goal-line technology. Offside calls are supported by the limb-tracking technology FIFA introduced at recent tournaments.
Any new rules this cycle?
- 26-player squads β every nation registered an expanded 26-man squad (you can browse all 1,247 players on the team pages).
- The eight-second rule β under the 2025 law changes, a goalkeeper who holds the ball longer than eight seconds concedes a corner kick (previously an indirect free kick that was rarely enforced).
- Captains-only protocol β referees may require that only the captain approach them to discuss major decisions.
Why does Terra Soccer rank all 48 teams in one table?
The official competition uses groups and brackets β our unified league table is Terra Soccer's signature view, ranking every team by points, then goal difference, then goals for, so you can watch the whole field reshuffle with each result. The Groups page tracks the official group standings, and each knockout round has its own page in the navigation.
